Words of Abraham Ramírez Vásquez, Survivor of the Massacre on February 12th Against CODEDI

Sierra Sur, Oaxaca

Long live autonomy!!

February 18th, 2018 in el Centro de Capacitación

My name is Abraham Ramírez Vázquez, and I represent the Committee for the Defense of Indigenous Rights (CODEDI).  We have a presence in more than 50 communities in the central valleys, southern Sierra, Coast and Istmo of the state of Oaxaca.  As an organization, our principal project is to construct the autonomy of our peoples and defend our territories.

On February 12th, we were invited to a meeting in the state of Oaxaca, in the General Secretariat of the Government, to address an issue present in the municipality of Santiago Xanica.  A post-electoral political issue.  Upon returning from that meeting, we were savagely attacked by gunmen, in an area in front of the district of Miahuatlán, where three of our compañeros were killed.  For us, we hold responsible the state government, Alejandro Murat, because he is the only truly responsible for this crime where three of our compañeros were killed.

But why did they kill our compañeros?  We as CODEDI have been organizing autonomy in our communities in different regions.  In which, in some manner, we affect the local powerful interests, the interests of the loggers, the interests of big business that have plundered our territories, the businesses that are in the bays of Huatulco, as well as the mining companies.  Thus, that is the sure reason for which CODEDI suffered this attack.  And we name responsible the governor of the state as long as he doesn’t prove otherwise, as long as he does not bring justice to those responsible for the crimes where three of our compañeros were killed.

We also want to tell all the local, national and international compañeros and organizations that have shown their support for us, well thanks compañeros.  And we want to tell you that from this place, from the Finca Alemania, where we have our autonomous work, where we are organizing autonomy, we will continue in struggle, we will continue resisting.  We will intensify our organizational work in this state, in defense of our land and territory.

Politically alive, you have not died, you have not died comrade.  Your death, your death, your death will be avenged!  And who will avenge?  The organized people.  And how?  In struggle.  Then: struggle, struggle, struggle, do not stop fighting for a just cause that wants freedom.  Struggle, struggle, struggle, do not stop fighting for a just cause that wants freedom.

CODEDI lives, the struggle continues!  CODEDI lives and lives!  The struggle continues and continues!

It is seen and felt, CODED is present!  It is seen and felt, CODEDI is present!

Justice for the three fallen compañeros of CODEDI!
