Lafkenche Territorial Identity Against the Situation Impacting Machi Celestino Córdova

Temuco, April 14th, 2018

The Lafkenche Territorial Identity, with communities from the Gulf of Arauco to Port Aysén, in the context of the situation impacting Machi Celestino Córdova, declare:

We energetically reject the Chilean State for not authorizing the request of Machi Celestino Córdova.  He is unjustly imprisoned in Temuco, and has for three months maintained a hunger strike, appealing for his right to leave prison for 48 hours in order to carry out a ceremony in his Rewe, thus fulfilling his duty as a spiritual leader in his community.

We express our solidarity with Machi Celestino Córdova and his community, considering that he has made this request following all established protocols, protected by international treaties signed by Chile.  We furthermore affirm that his case lacks concluding evidence demonstrating his guilt.

We urge the authorities of the Chilean State to respect the basic human right of developing one’s spirituality, in spite of being deprived of one’s freedom.

Furthermore, our organization calls on different international organizations to urgently intervene in this unjust situation, for which our ancestral authority is risking his life.
