After the kidnapping and assassination of Abraham Hernández González yesterday, July 17th, in Salchi, Pochutla, members of the CODEDI organization blockaded the entrance to the airport in Huatulco on the coast of Oaxaca. Abraham Hernández was a regional coordinator of CODEDI. The demand was that the Alejandro Murat government immediately hand over the body of our compañero. This eventually happened last night around midnight.

Today July 18th, CODEDI has continued with the blockade of the airport demanding the Alejandro Murat government immediately detain those responsible, as there is clear evidence such as the license plate number and the vehicle type of which was utilized by those that assassinated our compañero. We want to stress that the assassins wore military style uniforms and were masked, which prevented them from being identified, but which is associated with groups of organized crime that operate in the region.

Before the total incapacity of the Alejandro Murat government to provide security, not only for CODEDI and the social organizations, but to the people in general in the coastal region, we call on the social organizations and society in general to organize to confront organized crime that arrived to the state when Murat came to power.

At this moment, the blockade of the airport continues indefinitely. Until the detention and punishment of those responsible for the assassination of our compañero Abraham Hernandez, that adds to the paramilitary attack and assassination of three compañeros of CODEDI on February 12th of this year in the Sierra of Miahuatlán. This took place when our compañeros were returning from a reunion organized by the Murat government and where the commission of CODEDI was threatened by his functionaries.

We make a fraternal call to the social organizations and the teachers of the Section 22 to maintain attentive and in solidarity with the situation. Above all, we call on everyone to organize everywhere in the state to stop once and for all the climate of criminal violence that arrived with Murat to the state of Oaxaca.

Fraternally and combatively,
Committee for the Defense of Indigenous Rights
