Statement from the Imprisoned Compañeros of La Voz Verdadera del Amate

Cintalapa de Figueroa, Chiapas

September 17, 2017

We call on the comrades mentioned below and the others in support. Here in “El Amate” CERSS No. 14, located in Cintalapa de Figueroa, there are five of us in struggle, raising our voices. We are Indigenous people of Tzeltal and Tzotzil ethnicities. We want to denounce the anomalies of our public defender and bring to light the misdeeds of this lawyer in his defense of all Indigenous peoples. His name is José Andrés López Gómez. He has not acted diligently and on the contrary has shown indifference and apathy toward our causes. He has even asked us for money, hammocks, chairs and other things that we make in this prison. If we do not accede to his desires he abandons our cases. This of course has created disputes and irreconcilable problems.

We thus demand from both the president of the Institute for Public Defense and Gabriel Meneses, the sub director of the Institute of Public Defense in “El Amate”, a defense adequate that pursues the truth of the matters and our freedom. We demand the assignment of a new public defender that will manage and promote what is necessary for our defense.

To our compañeros and compañeras of the Network Against Repression that are following our case and that mobilize according to their abilities.

We send our greetings to the national and international Sixth Declaration of the Lacondona Jungle , to the Frayba Human Rights Center (Fray Bartolomé de las Casas), to Ayotzinapa and to the EZLN.
