This communique comes from the Coordinator of the United Peoples of the Valley of Ocotlán (CPUVO). It speaks to the tension in the community caused by the municipal president, Servando Díaz Vásquez, serving the interests of the mining company Fortuna Silver Mines and not the local population. The original in Spanish was published by El Colectivo Oaxaqueño en Defensa de los Territorios and can be found here.
With this communiqué, we want to make visible the authoritarianism and abuse of power of municipal president, Servando Díaz Vásquez. With his stubbornness, he wants to open the municipal palace through the use of violence, acting with paramilitary groups in the municipality. This is not the true solution to the problem in San José del Progreso.
Since 2008, the Coordinator of the United Peoples of the Valley of Ocotlán (CPUVO) has demanded by all means that the government give attention to the problem generated in our municipality by the San José mining project. Since the arrival of Fortuna Silver Mines, violence has increased in our community.
We hold responsible the mining company, the General Secretary of Government, the municipal president Servando Díaz Vásquez and his entire municipal government for whatever situation occurs that puts the integrity of the population of San José Progreso at risk.
We do not want any more aggressions or assassinations!
Coordinator of the United Peoples of the Valley of Ocotlán
