“Observing Our Small World” Denunciation of the Prisoners of the Voz Verdadera del Amate

February 18th, 2017

The organization La Voz Verdadera del Amate met on Tuesday February 14th, to address issues regarding what is happening in the central penitentiary Number 14, El Amate. We see four points of which the authorities have failed to comply with promises made by the sub-secretary of government.

The first point regards visitors. Visitors bring things that are indispensable to the inmates and imprisoned family members. However, these things are often not allowed to pass through to the inmates or are charged by the taking of ten percent of the things by the staff at the prison.

Secondly, the price of thread and wood is constantly rising. Rather than helping us, this hurts us. The work that we do on the inside with these materials helps us survive and also helps many of the families on the outside.

The third point regards medicine. When imprisoned compañeros become sick and ask for medicine in the infirmary, they do not receive it because there is no medicine. On the other hand, when someone wants to remove a tooth, it costs fifty pesos. Similarly, when the inmate has blood work done, it also costs money.

The fourth point: food. The sub-secretary specified that the food would improve, but until now he has not fulfilled his promise. Two months have passed, and the food still consists of beans in the morning and beans in the evening. All of the inmates are tired of eating beans. Also, dinner is piece of bread that each inmate receives.

This is the point of view of the six inmates and we make it clear that we are organizing here in the Cereso Number 14: El Amate.
