(This communique comes from the family, friends and support network of Mapuche political prisoner, Machi Celestino Córdova. The communique speaks to the grave health situation of the Machi due to his ongoing hunger strike, and the inability of the various levels of government to address his demands for the return to his Rewe and the free practice of his spirituality in prison. The original in Spanish can be found here).

Nueva Imperial
July 19th, 2018

We communicate to the Mapuche Nation, to the Lof Mapu, and to all of the Mapuche authorities and non-Mapuche organizations at the national and international level.

Kiñe: Today, July 19th, 2018, at 10:00 am, the lawyer Jorge Guzmán went to visit the Machi Celestino Córdova, where he was denied the visit. After more than an hour of waiting to communicate with the Regional Director of Gendarmerie, he was denied entrance as the Machi was to be taken to the Regional Hospital for medical exams.

Epu: We denounce that the Machi was taken to the prison against his will, not respecting his position as spiritual authority nor permitting him to wear his Machi attire. He was irregularly admitted to the Regional Hospital of Tempuco where he remained for more than 9 hours. He consciously didn’t allow them to carry out the medical exams and insured them he will not receive any type of medical attention in the hospital.

Kula: While the hours passed, his wife was allowed to enter to see him for a few minutes, generating a greater state of concern regarding his health.

Meli: Not one precaution was taken in the ambulance ride during the transfer from the hospital of Temuco to the hospital of Nueva Imperial. There was no concern for the well-being of the Machi. This caused episodes of stress that can cause a more serious health problem.

Kechu: During the night, he was admitted to the Intercultural Hospital without his consent. For our Machi to be well, he needs to return to his Rewe. If not in his Rewe, the best place is to be in the prison together with his Chemamull.

Therefore, we say that, if the government has the will to translate our Machi to a hospital it seems highly contradictory that he cannot be taken to his Rewe, which is the healing place for a Machi.

Thus, we hold responsible the Chilean State and the government of Turno, the Gendarmerie of Chile, the Regional Director Leonardo Barrientos, the National Director Claudia Bendeck, the Ministry of Health Dr. Emilio Satelices, the Ministry of Justice Hernán Larraín, the Ministry of the Interior Andrés Chadwick and the president of the republic Sebastián Piñera for the deterioration of the health of the Machi. We hold them responsible for being ineffective, of not having the will to resolve a situation that has put the life and well-being of our Machi in risk since the beginning of his hunger strike 102 + 50 days. We remind everyone that the demand of the Machi Celestino is for the exit to his Rewe for 48 hours to renew his Rewe and be able to exercise his spirituality inside the prison. Before the hunger strike, these demands were sought through the juridical and governmental routes. All of which were negated on part of the state.

Küla: We call on all of the Longko, Machi, Werken authorities, organizations and Wenuy to be present at the Intercultural hospital of Nueva Imperial so that our Machi will soon be returned to be with his Chemamull and today more than ever deliver him to the Newen that he needs so dearly.

Amulepe Malón!!
