MACHI CELESTINO CORDOVA IS TRANSFERRED TO THE TEMUCO PRISON

New Imperial August 9, 2018.

Mari mari kom pu che, Kom pu wenuy, to all our Mapuche and non-Mapuche brothers and sisters, this afternoon Celestino Cordova was transferred from the Intercultural Hospital of Nueva Imperial to the Temuco prison after halting his hunger strike on July 28th of this year. On the same day he was finally able to visit his Rewe; we would like to remind you:

1.- The hunger strike that our Machi sustained for 102 + 57 days and 3 days of a dry hunger strike, came to encompass a struggle that transcends Machi individuality. Not only do we consider this a historical demand for the Mapuche people, but also a prison demand for all inmates of Mapuche origin and indigenous peoples. We critique from a political-spiritual plane and highlight issues of respecting fundamental rights for Mapuche health and free spiritual exercise inside the prison. For that reason, we want to present the petition of our Machi, so that it can become yours:

Kiñe: For the respect and rights of all Mapuche spiritual authority, I request 48 hours to leave for my Rewe immediately and for the renewal of this one. Although the Rewe visit was achieved, I was only allowed 14 hours with a few people and with a strong police presence. We inform you that this ceremony only served as a temporary solution for the Machu Kutrang that afflicts our spiritual authority. Since Machitun could not finish due to time constraints and we did not have all the necessary people for this ceremony, we have not finished.

Epu: For the respect and rights of all indigenous peoples, I demand freedom to exercise our own spiritual and ceremonial belief inside (and outside) the prisons of the country, an issue that is equally urgent.

Küla: The right to inhabit exclusive prison units for members of indigenous peoples throughout the country, according to our lives and customs.

Meli: Demand the application of the ILO-convention 169 of the Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention, 1989.

Kechu: The restitution of our land, territory and compensation for the historic and current damage to humanity caused by the Chilean state.

Kayu: The acquittal of all our “lamieng” persecuted politically and judicially for the Mapuche cause.

2 – Today he goes back to prison with high morale, his Newen strengthened and firm in his convictions. Today we demand that the Chilean state, the current government and its institutions, once and for all resolve the petition for the benefit of all those deprived of liberty.

3.- We call to continue the fight for freedom for Brothers Pablo and Benito Trangol, and for all those deprived of liberty for Mapuche reasons. We cannot continue to accept judicial aberrations, the anti-terrorist law, the militarization of our territories and the impunity that continues in the judiciary and security agencies.

Kom pu lamngen, Thanks again to the social movements, Mapuche and non-Mapuche organizations, communities in resistance and the people of nature and diverse religious beliefs who helped in the request for our Machi. The affection, drive and commitment to get to the end, generated an awakening in our spirituality and our demands have spread to different sectors. Without a doubt this is an important achievement for all and has the footprints of the Machi Celestino Córdova.

We invite you to continue in the advancement in the defense of all our rights, territory and biodiversity.

In the medium-term, mobilizations will begin again and we will continue to support the petition of our ancestral authority Machi Celestino Córdova. We invite you to visit him in the Temuco men’s prison on Monday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 3.30 p.m.
