Declaration Against the New "Atenco Law"

Declaration Against the New “Ley Atenco”

Declaration against the new “Ley Atenco” that threatens the freedom of expression and freedom of social protest

Before the approval of so-called #leyatenco the people, towns and organizations that make up el Fuego de la Digna Resistencia, express the following:

We denounce the opacity with which the local congress of the State of Mexico conducts themselves. No political party dared to make public the bill until the moment of its approval, just prior to the holidays of Semana Santa. This initiative was kept secret to try, naively, to keep anyone from countering the law.

It is clear that this absurd law tries to repress with impunity the peoples, towns, and organizations of the State of Mexico from defending the land, territory, and natural resources like water and forest, indigenous autonomy, and human rights in general before the structural reforms and megaprojects. However, it should also be clear that we are those who, while continuing to defend what we defend now, will do away with these authoritarian and repressive attacks.

We have requested the center of human rights Zeferino Ladrillero to carry out a detailed study of the #leyatenco for a better understanding of its scope and our denunciation of what it implies. We know that if we let such a law pass in the State of Mexico, it would permit its introduction across the entire country.

We will consult each other and discuss internally in our decision spaces this new law, but at this moment we announce that it will be Monday March 28th, 2016 when we make public our overcall positioning, as well as legal, political and social actions that we plan to carry out in the future. Therefore, we ask the means of communication and the free and alternative media to remain attentive to the place and time of the press conference we will carry out.
