COOA: Total Condemnation of the State Crimes Against Members of CODEDI

Consejo de Organizaciones Oaxaqueñas Autónomas (COOA)

Council of Autonomous Oaxacan Organizations

The members of the Consejo de Organizaciones Oaxaqueñas Autónomas (COOA), made up of Organizaciones Indias por los Derechos Humanos (OIDHO), Comité de Defensa de los Derechos Indígenas (CODEDI), Unión Campesina Indígenas de Oaxaca—Emiliano Zapata (UCIO-EZ), Coordinadora Indígena Popular Autónoma (CINPA) and Asamblea de los Pueblos Indígenas del Istmo en Defensa de la Tierra y el Territorio (APIIDTT), strongly condemn the cowardly attack against compañeros of CODEDI, the night of February 12th of this year.  The attack took place on the Federal highway 175 near Miahuatlán, Oaxaca, where a group of paramilitaries gunned down three compañeros and wounded compañero Abraham Ramírez Vásquez, co-founder of CODEDI.

Everything indicates that the command of the assassin was, and is to assassinate our compañero Abraham.  Already on multiple occasions he has been subject to death threats, as well as attacks and accusations from businessman, politicians and media at the service of the state and opposed to the intense activity of CODEDI in defense of the right of our peoples.  It is not a coincidence that the assassination happened just after our compañeros had left a meeting convoked by the state government, to supposedly resolve a political conflict in the municipality of Santiago Xanica.

These state crimes against our compañeros take place in the context of institutionalized violence of the state government of Alejandro Murat, that obeys corporate interests, that seeks to extract the resources from our territories through their megaprojects and Special Economic Zones.

The same situation of violence, repression, persecution, imprisonment, femicides and assassinations is taking place in the national context against social activists that organize to reject the projects of death of a corrupt political and business class—against those who opt to construct a more just and free society for our Indigenous and campesino peoples, as well as all of the people of Mexico.

We profoundly regret that three young Indigenous people have had their lives taken in such a cowardly manner.  They will always be present in the struggles that belongs to us all.

We call on all Indigenous communities, social organizations and the people in general to stand in solidarity with our brothers of CODEDI and to be attentive to the actions in the near future that they will carry out.

Justice for our fallen comrades of CODEDI!

Condemnation of the crimes of the state!

No more assassinations of social fighters!

An end to the criminalization of social struggle!

For the defense of our rights and territories, not one step back!

Oaxaca de Flores Magón, February 13th, 2018
