This communiqué comes from the Committee for the Defense of Indigenous Rights (CODEDI) after three of their members were detained today on the coast of Oaxaca. This latest act of harassment on part of the state follows a series of acts of repression since the beginning of 2018 against the organization including the assassination of five compañeros and the detention of five others.

The Committee for the Defense of Indigenous Rights (CODEDI) is an organization that struggles for the defense of land and territory, as well as for our rights as Indigenous communities. We work from a political perspective of autonomy and self-determination. The Mexican government, both at the state and federal levels, has continually violated our rights of free determination since the beginning of our work twenty years ago. They imprisoned our general coordinator who was incarcerated for five years and since February 2018 to the contemporary moment, they have assassinated five of our compañeros and arbitrarily detained five more. All of these acts remain in complete impunity.

Today, March 21st, 2019, they detained our general coordinator at around 4:00 pm in the community of San Pedro Pochutla. He was accompanied by two other members of the organization, Adalberto Hernández (a minor) and Moisés González who were also arrested. We want to make clear the legal arbitrariness of the state, with no justice for our assassinated compañeros.

The Mexican state is distorting the idea of justice, causing more injustice. We ask that everyone maintain alert, to mobilize until we achieve the justice desired by the peoples, and the immediate release of our three compañeros. With the presence of the National Guard outside the PGR in Huatulco today, we decided to take to the streets in front of the PGR where we were intimidated, harassed and photographed while we acted within our legitimate rights to demand the freedom of our compañeros. The National Guard was also impeding the entrance of our compañeros onto the street of the PGR. We appeal to the solidarity of the people of Oaxaca, Mexico and the world. If they touch one of us, they touch all of us and we will all mobilize.
