Alert in the Communities of Valle de Ocotlán, Oaxaca
The mining company, Silver Mines, has solicited the Federal Government for a new mining concession in the Valle de Ocotlán. This new concession is named Monte Albán IV, fracción 1 and has an extension of more than 10,000 hectares.
This is not just another concession, although it would be dangerous in itself, but what is really troubling is that this new concession is located on the population centers of the four most populated municipalities of the Valley of Oaxaca: Ocotlán de Morelos, San Antonino Castillo Velasco, Santiago Apóstol and La Asunción Ocotlán. Furthermore, it occupies part of the territories of the municipalities of San Juan Chilateca, Santa Ana Zegache, Santa Lucía Ocotlán, San Pedro Apóstol and Magdalena Ocotlán.
In the following maps you can see the location and its geographical limits.
The only remaining option is for us to organize ourselves, as with this concession there is serious risk including displacement, with an affected population of more than 100,000 inhabitants. If the displacement occurs we would be living, literally, above a mine.
